Texas 2009: Houston Cockrell Butterfly Center: Kale and Chard

Kale and Chard

Outside the butterfly center, there was some decorative chard and kale. Both of these are edible. I guess that plants for caterpillars were inside the butterfly center; plants for humans were outside. But mostly these plants were decorative. Kale is semi-famous for being both edible and decorative. When folks on the old rec.garden usenet newsgroup argued about whether to split into separate newsgroups for discussion of vegetables and decorative plants, one poster argued eloquently against this false division: "Another problem is the issue of companion planting, which is often a mix of edibles and non-edibles. And for God's sake, WHAT ABOUT THE KALE?"

Chard is another beautiful edible plant. My great-grandparents grew some lovely chard in their back yard. It was good to see some here.
