Photos: San Francisco Bay Area 1999-2002

Sometimes I see things around San Francisco that need to be photographed. There are a lot of interesting things to see; some perhaps unbelievable. A good photographer can have trouble keeping up. I'm not a good photographer, so I just try to document the things that I think other people are missing.

[Photo: Potrero Hill: Art truck] I saw this truck in the Potrero Hill neighborhood. It must be art

[Photo: Waterfront: Wall] mossy wall, a pipe, a fence, and a hillock at the end of 20th Street
[Photo: Waterfront: Cranes] Some cranes at the end of 20th Street
[Photo: Waterfront: Gantry] The Hudson's gantry, Mission Rock Terminal. I think the Hudson carries automobiles.
[Photo: China Basin: Rotting Piers] Abandoned piers, S. China Basin
[Photo: Fisherman's Wharf: A Visiting Tall Ship] The tall ship Europa, in town for the 2002 Sail San Francisco festival.
[Photo: Port of Oakland: Trailers] At an intermodal shipping center like the Port of Oakland, you need an efficient way to store lots of flat truck trailers. This is a photo of a structure that looks something like a big ski/snowboard rack. Really big. Perhaps the snowboard rack of the gods.
[Photo: Port of Oakland: Cranes] Cargo-manipulating devices. Someone told me that these inspired the design of the At-At walkers in the "Star Wars" movies.
[Photo: UCSF: Pipes] Stairs, pipes; in background, a door into empty space, all part of the mysterious areas behind UCSF's Parnassus campus.
[Photo: UCSF: Stairs] Stairs meeting at odd angles; fans and filters. This area behind UCSF has been renovated, and now the stairs are even stranger than this photo suggests.
[Photo: UCSF: Tanks] UCSF has no shortage of interesting Industrial containers
[Photo: UCSF: Not a Wet-Nurse] Statue at the School of Nursing
[Photo: UCSF: Smokestacks] Smokestacks
[Photo: Presidio: Coast] View of Baker Beach from Coastal Trail
[Photo: : Presidio: Manure, Etc.] Rolling golden hills of manure and mulch

[Photo: Light Control Box] One night I worked very late. I barely caught the last train back to San Francisco from Berkeley. I'd missed the last streetcar from the train station to my home, so I decided to walk back rather than bother with the bus.
[Photo: Light Control Box] As I was walking along the street, I found a utility box sitting open. Looking inside, I saw wiring and boxes, but I couldn't really focus. I'd been working very late and my vision was blurry.
[Photo: Light Control Box] Still, I was curious to know what I was looking at, so I took a bunch of pictures. They turned out well enough such that, after I'd rested and got the pictures developed, I was able to tell that I'd been looking at a controller for some crossing lights.
