Haight Street is busy in the mornings as locals head out toward their workplaces. It's not long until the tourists arrive from their downtown hotels, and street activity doubles by 3 o'clock most days as business picks up. Did you know: as many as a dozen shops sell tie-dye T-shirts on Haight Street? You can easily buy one on any given block. Of course, there is a wide selection of other psychedelic items available in the shops. As you stroll along Haight Street, you will see occasional skirmishes amongst the transients. Just last week, as tourists looked on, four kids squared off right in front of Ben & Jerry's over sidewalk space. This kind of skirmish happens at least 10 times a day. The situation didn't warrant the police coming: not one shop owner called in a report of the incident. These small flare-ups are a way that street denizens fill their day with activity. As you stroll along Haight Street, you will see a dozen newsstands divided over a 4-block stretch, most containing the local San Francisco Bay Guardian and the SF Weekly. 5 and 6 p.m. see increased foot traffic most days, as locals arrive home from work and go about their shopping, as the tourists, their cameras full of pictures and their wallets a bit lighter of money, head back toward their hotels.
