The OKCupid blog is pretty amazing. Way back when, it caused a stir talking about trends in USA interracial dating. Plenty of USA folks say they don't care about race. But when the OKCupid folks looked at the statistics of what folks actually do, it showed the gap between words and deeds. The book Dataclysm updates that info and other "big data" ways of figuring out how people really behave online. For word nerds like me, the section on how word choice relates to race was pretty amazing, reminding me of the cultural bubbles I bobble around in. Recommended, but if you read it… brace yourself for harsh realizations. People are… not exactly awful, but certainly not as nice as you'd think they were if your measurements relied on self-reporting in surveys.
