Awkward Meals: Pretty Pickle

Excerpt from mail sent ?1992?

I read Penn & Teller's How to Play with Your Food. It was great. The most important piece of information I got out of this great reference is that you don't need to pass many volts through a pickle to get it to light up. In fact, as this wondrous tome reveals, ordinary household current is all that you need. So today I went out and bought some pickles, sliced the power cord off of the broken VCR and hooked everything up. And sure enough, that pickle glowed. It also gave off some smoke and smelled like a burning pickle. At this point, it occured to me that when I first heard about people getting a pickle to light up, the site mentioned had been the parking lot of Bell Labs. It didn't take too long to figure out why an outside setting might be appropriate for this sort of activity. Eventually we managed to get the apartment aired out.
