Departures: Texas 2009

In late March/early April 2009, I went to a few places in Texas. I didn't come back with a lot of anecdotes, but there were some photos.

Johnson Space Center had NASA stuff.

• Some of that was "Mission Control": big rooms full of desks where folks monitor and advise space missions.

Galveston was Houston's port and a beach resort town. It had been hit pretty hard by Hurricane Ike the year before.

• The Ocean Star was a former oil exploration that had been turned into a museum of offshore oil drilling. If you were willing to wade through some propaganda, there was some interesting engineering.
• The tall ship Juan Sebastian de Elcano was in port.
• One building in the harbor area had covered conveyor belts and thus I felt compelled to snap photos of it.

Houston was a lush city.

• The Cockrell Butterfly Center had, you know, butterflies
• Rice University had a pretty campus.
• I walked the length of Taft Street, snapping a photo once a block or so.

I went to Dallas, too.

• I saw an elephant walking loose. Earlier in Houston, I'd photographed elephants and elephant statuary. There was more such in Dallas.
• I was heading to a museum with old trains when I encountered that elephant. Eventually I made it to that museum.
• I didn't snap photos from every block of Dallas' Commerce St but I snapped quite a few.
• The Pearlstone Silos where photogenic, but unfortunately I was the only photographer in the neighborhood.
