Difference Engine II was meant to generate tables of computednumbers. Like Knuth's Metafont, Babbage got distracted by the wonders of printing, and decided the Difference Engine should provide a choice of fonts, line spacing, and more. This tookup a non-trivial part of the machinery. On this part of themodern reconstruction, you can see some of the controls for tweaking report-generation.
