Romans had mines, which they drained using water wheels. Part of one of their old waterwheels survived. The interpretive "text" included a diagram showing how a mine was drained by means of many of these wheels. Each wheel was worked by a slave as a treadmill. That must have been a great job: walking a treadmill in water in a deep hole in the ground.
