From the interpretive text: "Amplifiers for telephone signals were among the first projects undertaken at the Bell Laboratories, the research and development organization established by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. Tests on the first transcontinental telephone line in 1914 determined that the best amplifier was H.D. Arnold's modification of the vacuum tube invented by Lee de Forest."
