From the interpretive text: "Edward Hebern, a Californian, deisgned this cipher machine for the commercial market. In one of the most important developments in cipher technology, the rotors are wired so that electrical impulses are transferred from one element of a rotor to another. Turning the rotors changes the flow of current, and hence the letters of the enciphered message. The sender reads out the enciphered message from the light board above the keyboard.
