: New: Book Report: The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby

It's Tom Wolfe articles about culture, celebrities, and New York city. He wrote these in the early 60s. The culture writing holds up. Even if demolition derbies are no longer so popular, it's fun to wonder about how these fads became so popular back in the day before social media.

Maybe the biggest surprise was reading about an auto show for teens. One of the attractions was a chance to race slot cars with Dick Dale. I have fond memories of the Phantom Surfers' slot car music album "The Exciting Sounds of of Model Road Racing" but I always thought the concept was a joke. I still think that, but this article made me realize it's only a half-joke, a thin joke wrapper around a strangely-large kernel of truth.
