Why should an out-of-town tourist visit the Dallas Zoo? An African lion in San Francisco looks much like an African lion in Dallas, right? What is Dallas' specialty? According to their literature, the Dallas Zoo is a world leader for saddle-billed storks. Ahem: Your Dallas Zoo is the worldwide expert in caring for Saddle-billed storks. We pioneered proper housing to encourage natural behaviors and reproduction. In 1994, we were the first zoological park in the world to produce chicks. We have taught many zoos how to care for their Saddle-bills. At first, we hand-raised the chicks. Keepers used a costume and stork puppet-head to feed the chicks so they did not grow up thinking they were people.
