Chicago 07: Cracked Skin

Cracked Skin on a stuffed Lictenstein's Hartebeest. Saith the interpretive text: "Because these animals have been working for The Field Museum since 1896, some specimens have cracked from exposure to light, changing temperatures, and humidity. We're making sure they can continue their important job of educating our visitors. In some cases, we have mounted a camera that takes a picture of the cracks daily. Hydro-thermographs record the temperature and humidity. This helps us understand how to best preserve the animals and ensure their safety for years to come. These specimens are irreplacable--most are at least 80 years old, and many are now endangered species. Your patience and support are appreciated as we work to improve our animal exhibits."
