When my dad was at IIT, the neighborhood was going through a sort of... what's the opposite of gentrification? It was full of abandoned mansions which were being torn down. A few frats had taken over an old mansion, and my dad sub-let a room from one of those frats for a while. An old Armour mansion, had a big vault in the middle--you could walk through the vault to get around to various places in the mansion. Eventually, my dad got a spot in the dorms. The mansion has since been torn down... apparently, to make room for more dorms.
