Back at Ron's house, a bunch of Geoworkers and ex-Geoworkers were coming over to play games. I was helping to make dinner. Specifically, I was chopping garlic. Even more specifically, I was trying to chop garlic like this guy in the cooking video. Ron had showed me a video in which some chef with an outrageous French accent demonstrated certain basic cooking techniques, including garlic chopping. He was very fast.
I attempted to chop garlic very fast in the manner demonstrated. I indeed chopped garlic faster than I ever had before. It wasn't until later that I noticed that I'd made several little cuts on the inner knuckle of my left index finger. Looking back, I can't remember this patch of skin getting anywhere near the sharp part of a knife, but I'd obviously missed something. Something obviously hadn't missed me.
I thought about blood, about transmitted bacteria. Were there bacteria in blood? I started washing off some of the food I'd prepared, looking for spots of blood. I made a mental note: I should attempt to finish reading Modern Meat before it drove me mental.
We ate dinner, played games. I discovered that Steve Kertes is a frighteningly competent gamer. Minutes after learning the rules of the game, he was handily winning hands of Lord of the Fries. He managed to consistently keep ahead at Guillotine. I wondered what would happen if he were to take on Ray Choi at Junta. The end of the world, perhaps.
